On Sunday I had the pleasure to assist a great event! It was a fundraiser organized by Create a Change Now (CACN) this organization is a “Las Vegas non-profit 501c3 organization that is changing the way families eat by educating and empowering children to make healthier food choices that are nutritious and delicious.”
Under the guidance of CACN, students from local lower and middle schools will grow their own edible gardens and harvest fresh organic produce from it. Our goals are to educate children on where their food comes from and get them involved in the process from the ground, to harvest and preparation to the dinner table. We want to get children outdoors and “hands on” planting edible gardens as well as teaching them the skills to harvest, prepare and cook the foods they have grown.
I had the chance to meet the organizers, Candace Maddin the president. Nancy Glass-Stone, Executive Director of CACN opened her house for the fund raising event, and some of their supporter Chefs were there too.
Chef Johns Simmons, from the really known local restaurant, FIREFLY was there, preparing really healthy all organic Gazpacho , and serving their famous PAELLA.
Chef Sharynne Frazer, is Owner and Founder of ChefSharynne.com, a public speaking and raw food certification organization based in Las Vegas. The Chef is the owner/operator of Something’s Brewing Coffee House featuring her RAW Food Express. The Chef’s own creation of Grab & Go… “Healthy Fast Food To Go”!
Pat Garcia from Eloisas Fine Pastries and Cateringand Last but not least the talented Chef Kas.
But I have to be honest, the most pleasant surprise of the day was meeting The owners and founders or GARDEN FARMS, Brittany and Bryan Vellinga, Their company is based on the idea that everyone can enjoy the benefits of vegetable gardening in their own space at home. Garden Farms of Nevada utilizes years of knowledge and tested skill in the Las Vegas Desert to teach people how they can grow their own food. If time is an issue, they also provide services to help you tend your garden as needed. At the end of the day, you are left with nutritious and wholesome vegetables that were organically grown in your own back yard. Best of ALL It didn’t seem as expensive as you would think it could be. More of, they are the ones providing the vegetable gardens for CACN schools!!!!
We are so stuck in the idea that nothing can grow in Las Vegas, and they explained to me how this is totally NOT true! You can have your first harvest in as little as 30 Days!!!!! HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!!!!!!
I have to say thank you for this, it was a great learning Sunday!! 🙂
I hope this helps many of my blog friends, I think is good good information here, ’til next time xoxo
