Every year I struggle with the same!
What to wear for family photos??
I know I shouldn’t ….I am a photographer! However It all comes down to organizing yourself and this 5 tips have been so helpful over the years not only for my clients but for myself also!
Pick a palette
I cannot stress this enough! Picking a color scheme to work from is key.
you can pick your colors based on a variety of things
Start with the end in mind:
-The colors in your home. Now you are pre-planning for the art you will place in your walls so it is cohesive with your home decor. This doesn’t mean it has to be exactly the same color than your furniture, it means it compliments it and/or it acts as accent colors.
-Colors you love, or look better on you.
Picking a palette will help you narrow down and focus instead of having million of options to pick from.
Once you have your patterns, now you can pull your favorite colors from there for the rest of the family members. for example:
Let’s say you pick your son’s plaid shirt first which has the color palette that you chose. Now, you will pick one color from there and you can look for solid color shirts in that pattern for you. And a different shade for Hubby.
I like telling moms to pick their cloth first but that is not always possible. When you pick first you can go with something you LOVE and have no restrictions!
It’s way easier to visualize the whole puzzle once you know what one piece looks like! Try starting with mom or daughter, since women’s clothing tends to have more colors and prints.
Add accessories depending on your style.
Hats, scarves, gloves and vest are my favorite for winter and fall sessions!
Stick to one clothing change
Don’t make things more complicated than they need to be! All you need for an awesome family session is one outfit for everyone. Changing outfits will take time away from your shoot and can put your kids in a grumpy mood.
Keep the weather in mind
Make sure to be ready for the weather. Nothing worst than freezing and trying to look cheerful and happy.
Try your cloth in advance.
Having a plan is planning for success. I encourage my families to devote the picture day to create a experience. and knowing that you will not have the cloth stress is a big part of that. No last minute surprises make for a great experience.
If you have children under 4 , is a good idea to have a back up outfit.
FUN FIRST
We all want to look beautiful and gorgeous and perfect. In reality what we want is a reflection of our lives. SO prioritize LOVE and FUN, if you can not move on the cloth or your kiddo is not happy, mostl likely he will not be his/her funny happy self.
Bellow are some ideas on the color palettes.
