Family fall photo session season is here!
Pounding.
Huffing.
Serious.
Not cooperating?
I’m not talking about your kids, I’m talking about your hubby!
Nothing makes photo sessions more frustrating than an impatient frustrated dad and husband.
There I said it!
In my experience through the last 11 years of photographing families and children that has been the constant that moms will bring up the most when either booking a session or hesitating to book one.
As moms we have this romantic idea of what we want our photos to look like.
Perfect.
Dreamy.
Cohesive.
Sweet.
And I can go on and on. I know I have the same idea of photos than all of you.
None of that will happen when we have a crabby husband on board.
So this are some of my tips to have an engaged husband on your session.
1-PLAN AHEAD.
This might be the number one tip. when you are prepared, your cloth are laid out, you have time, and you are NOT rushing, you already WON the first battle.
2- COMMUNICATE
When planning, dreaming, booking your session, be clear with your husband as how important this is for you. Make sure to include him on the planning process. I understand that most husbands DO NOT CARE if you go to the lake, the mountain or downtown for pictures, but maybe just maybe IF YOU ASK HIM, he will actually have an opinion.( I’m talking from my own experience!)
Is there something he is passionate about? Is there something you guys REALLY enjoy as a family that makes him happy, does he have a collection car, a passion for a sport, fishing, boating etc. incorporating some of those into the session might be a game changer. It might take a wee bee more of planning but think how much more involved he is bound to be if he actually has a STAR roll in the project.
3-PICK A DAY YOU BOTH ARE OFF.
If you are rushing off work, trying to look half way decent, your kids has just got out of soccer lessons and you are hungry….how likely do you think he ( and you!) is to be happy about it…leave alone having the kids cooperate under all that going on (which is a completely different blog post!)
4-MAKE A FAMILY DATE OUT OF IT!
I love knowing my families are all dressed up, and they are NOT going home to put their pajamas on!
If we are shooting in Mt Charleston, head to the lodge for dinner.
Doing the session downtown, take a stroll or go visit the container park.
If we headed to Lake Mead, take a stroll down Boulder City.
We live in a beautiful, eclectic, full of fun city! LIVE IT!
In my humble opinion, this will not only render beautiful images.
The memories of this day will be cherished FOREVER. and when you actually get your images back. YOU WILL LOVE LOOKING BACK AT THAT DAY AND RELIVE IT!.
5-PLAN AGAIN
I cannot stress this one enough. and that’s why it has 2 …TWO spots in this list.
Planning includes.
-Times you have to be ready.
-Having snacks and water for the road.
-Leaving with plenty of time to get to your destination.
6-HOW FRIENDLY/EXPERIENCED YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IS
This should go without saying. A professional photographer with years of experience photographing families will get your session and experience done in less time; with less fuss and make it a FUN experience from beginning to end.
I know a lot of this responsibility falls on us as moms, in general we are the ones dreaming about our legacy and how we are creating this life long lasting memories for our families.
If we just put a bit extra thought and love into the process I ASSURE you, he will be on board more often, more willing and even love the process at some point.
In the last 10+ years of shooting family photography ,what I had found is that my repeated families are the easiest, husbands already know me, they know what to expect and I get them out of there FAST !
